Colonoscopy

Your physician has requested that you have a colonoscopy examination to view the inside of your large intestine. Your appointment will last for two to three hours, but the actual test will only last about 30 minutes.

Your test will be performed at one of four locations:

You will be contacted the day prior to your exam to confirm the time of your arrival, along with any special instructions. If your procedure is to take place on a Monday you will be contacted the Friday before.

Please make sure that you arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. YOU MUST MAKE ARRANGEMENTS AHEAD OF TIME FOR A RESPONSIBLE PERSON TO DRIVE YOU HOME.

A colonoscopy is a visual examination of the colon. Your Bux-Mont physician will use an endoscope, which is a flexible, fiber-optic video device. Colonoscopies generally last about 30 minutes. You will be sedated to prevent pain and discomfort.

Preparation for the Exam:

It is very important to follow all preparation instructions so that your physician will have a clear view of your colon. If there is anything abnormal, such as a polyp, it may be removed during the procedure. Because of this, you must stop taking all aspirin and aspirin products 7 days before your procedure. If you are taking Coumadin, let your doctor know so that you can receive special instructions.

  1. Discuss with your doctor the medications you take. Your medication schedule may have to be adjusted the week before your colonoscopy.
  2. Unless otherwise directed by your physician, do not take aspirin or blood thinners for 4 to 7 days before the procedure.
  3. You must have a ride home from the hospital. Since you will be sedated, you will not be able to safely operate a vehicle or machinery for 24 hours.
  4. The day before the procedure you must follow a clear-liquid diet and use a bowel prep kit prescribe by your physician. Next >>
